Moving to Bowie, MD: The 2026 Relocation Guide Locals Wish They Had
August 27, 2026
Bowie Parks, Trails and Recreation: A Local’s Guide for 2026
August 27, 2026The City of Bowie does not run a single public school. Every public school assignment for a Bowie address, inside or outside city limits, comes from Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), and the boundaries were redrawn by a Board of Education vote on November 10, 2022, with changes phased in starting in the 2023 to 2024 school year.
Looking for a home in a specific school zone?
Bruno and Noël know Bowie street by street. Tell Bruno your budget, timeline and commute, and he’ll send homes that fit, with what similar homes actually sold for. Buying with a VA loan or moving on orders? Our team includes Noël, a disabled Navy veteran who continues to serve.
That means a listing remark, an old neighbor’s memory or a school name typed into an MLS field is not proof of anything. Here is how assignments, boundaries, specialty programs and report cards really work, with the 2026 to 2027 dates that matter for a move.
Who decides which school a Bowie address attends?
PGCPS draws attendance boundaries for its neighborhood schools. The Comprehensive School Boundary Initiative, which began in fall 2020, covered 165 neighborhood schools. It did not cover specialty schools, charter schools or regional schools, which admit by application or lottery instead of by address.
Your boundary school is guaranteed a seat. A specialty program seat is not. Keep those two ideas separate and most of the confusion goes away.
How do I look up the school for a specific house?
Use the PGCPS boundary lookup linked from pgcps.org/boundary (the Boundary Scenario Explorer), enter the exact street address, and read the assignment for each grade level. Save a dated screenshot. Assignments can split on a single street, so the house number matters, not just the subdivision name.
Which schools serve Bowie addresses?
Elementary schools located in Bowie include Heather Hills, Kenilworth, Northview, Pointer Ridge, Rockledge (7701 Laurel Bowie Road), Tulip Grove, Whitehall and Yorktown. High Bridge and Woodmore elementaries also serve Bowie addresses. The middle schools are Benjamin Tasker and Samuel Ogle.
Bowie High School, 15200 Annapolis Road, opened in 1965 and enrolls roughly 2,500 students. It serves the City of Bowie, Queen Anne and parts of Brock Hall, Fairwood, Glenn Dale, Woodmore and the former Greater Upper Marlboro area. Since 2005, ninth graders have attended the separate Belair Annex to relieve crowding in the main building. PGCPS lists a $25,865,000 major renovation of the Bowie Belair Annex (roof, HVAC, drainage, sprinklers, ceilings and asbestos abatement) as finished as of June 30, 2025. Bowie High’s SUMMIT program is an in-school honors track of about 60 students taking college-level and AP coursework.
Some 20720 and 20721 addresses, especially outside city limits, are zoned to DuVal or other high schools. That is exactly why the address lookup matters more than the ZIP.
How do PGCPS specialty programs and lotteries work?
PGCPS runs countywide programs that admit by application or lottery. For prekindergarten through grade 8 they include Chinese, French and Spanish Immersion, Montessori, Talented and Gifted (TAG) Centers, Creative and Performing Arts middle school and Project Lead the Way Gateway. High school options include Science and Technology, Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology (AEAT), the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s Community College, International Baccalaureate, Visual and Performing Arts, P-TECH and career and technical pathways.
Every application requires a PGCPS student identification number. Here are the published windows for seats starting in the 2027 to 2028 school year:
| Program | Who applies | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Specialty programs, PreK to grade 5 (lottery) | Rising PreK to grade 5 | November 2, 2026 to February 5, 2027 |
| Lottery charter schools | All grades | November 2, 2026 to February 5, 2027 |
| TAG Center lottery | Students already identified for TAG | November 2, 2026 to March 12, 2027 |
| AEAT and Science and Technology | Non-PGCPS 8th graders and current 9th graders | August 10 to October 9, 2026 |
| Academy of Health Sciences at PGCC | PGCPS 8th graders | September 8 to December 11, 2026 |
| Academy of Health Sciences at PGCC | Non-PGCPS 8th graders and current 9th graders | August 10 to October 9, 2026 |
Applicants for AEAT, Science and Technology and the Academy of Health Sciences must register and pay for the PSAT 8/9 given in October 2026. For the PreK to grade 5 lottery, the student ID request has to be made through ParentVUE at least 48 hours before the deadline; the cutoff is February 3, 2027 at 5 p.m. Every applicant gets a waiting list number by program, grade and sequence.
How does TAG identification work?
PGCPS screens every student at two points. In 2026 to 2027, all first graders take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test between October 19 and November 10, and all unidentified fourth graders take the Cognitive Ability Test between November 16 and December 15. Students at or above the 81st percentile move on to TAG screening. In grades 6 and 7, teachers and staff can nominate students using test data up to two years old.
Parents can nominate a student through January 15, 2027. To be considered for a TAG Center seat in 2027 to 2028, a student must be identified and coded for TAG services by March 12, 2027.
What do I need to register after I move?
Only a parent or court-appointed guardian can register a student. Proof of residence must show the registrant’s name and address, and PGCPS lists settlement papers, a lease, a rental receipt, a deed or a tax assessment bill as acceptable. Schools ask for originals, not copies, and may request utility bills as extra verification.
If you are staying with someone while you wait to close, PGCPS requires a notarized Shared Housing Disclosure Form plus the other household’s proof of residence, and official mail at the new address within 30 days of enrollment. Pupil Accounting is at 301-952-6300.
For 2026 to 2027, kindergarten required a student to turn 5 on or before September 1, 2026, and PreK required turning 4 by the same date, with proof of income for PreK. Early entrance to kindergarten was available for students turning 5 between September 2 and October 15. Registration opened April 7, 2026, and PGCPS set July 31 as the date to finish enrollment and ensure a bus assignment on the first day.
How do I read a Bowie school’s report card?
Go to the Maryland State Department of Education’s Maryland School Report Card site (reportcard.msde.maryland.gov). Each school gets one to five stars based on the percentage of points earned across indicators. Five stars requires at least 75%, four stars at least 60%.
Elementary and middle schools are scored on academic achievement, academic progress, English language proficiency progress, and school quality and student success. High schools swap academic progress for graduation rate and add readiness for postsecondary success. The 2024 to 2025 results, released November 4, 2025, showed 43% of Maryland schools at four or five stars.
Two cautions. First, State Superintendent Carey Wright has called the current system “convoluted,” and a new rating system may launch in the 2026 to 2027 school year, so year-over-year star comparisons may not line up. Second, read the specific school, not a district average: results vary between Bowie elementaries only a mile or two apart. Third-party sites blend state data with reviews, so check what they are actually measuring. For context, PGCPS’s Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s Community College scored 89 points in 2024 to 2025, second in the state.
What about Bowie State University?
Bowie State sits on a 338 acre campus at 14000 Jericho Park Road, next to the MARC station. Fall 2025 enrollment was about 5,970 students, and in 2025 it received a $50 million gift from MacKenzie Scott, the largest in its history. Streets near campus see move-in and game day traffic, and some nearby owners rent to graduate students and staff.
A school checklist for Bowie buyers
- Run the PGCPS boundary lookup on the exact address and save a dated screenshot.
- Pull each assigned school’s page on the Maryland School Report Card site.
- If a specialty program matters, check the application window against your settlement date.
- Keep original settlement papers handy: they double as proof of residence.
- Visit during the school day and ask the school about current grade configuration.
