Commuting from Bowie: MARC, Route 50, 301, 197 and the Routes to Fort Meade, Andrews and BWI

Bowie State MARC station has 675 parking spaces and every one is free, while the MARC and Metro garage at New Carrollton charges. That single difference is why many Bowie commuters headed to downtown DC drive north to the train instead of west to Metro, and the Penn Line ride to Union Station takes roughly half an hour.

Bowie sits where Route 50, Route 301, MD 197 and MD 3 meet, so it works for split commutes in nearly every direction. Here is how each one actually works, with the parking, rail and road details that matter.

How does the MARC train from Bowie work?

The MARC Penn Line stops at Bowie State station, 13900 Old Jericho Park Road, next to Bowie State University. The station opened February 27, 1989, replacing an older stop about 1.1 miles south, and has two side platforms on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. Southbound trains run to Washington Union Station by way of Seabrook and New Carrollton; northbound trains run to Odenton, BWI Airport, Baltimore Penn Station and beyond.

Not every Penn Line train stops at Bowie State, so build your day around the current timetable (the one in effect as of this writing took effect March 16, 2026). Penn Line service also runs on weekends. Fares are set by MARC’s Penn Line fare chart, and the MTA’s Transit Information Contact Center is 410-539-5000.

What is the closest Metro station to Bowie?

New Carrollton, at the east end of the Orange Line, is the closest Metrorail station. It is also a MARC, Amtrak and bus hub, and most Bowie drivers reach it by heading west on Route 50. For South Bowie, Mitchellville and Woodmore, Largo Downtown at the end of the Blue and Silver lines is often the better pick, reached by MD 214 (Central Avenue) or MD 202.

New Carrollton is also the eastern end of the Purple Line, the 16 mile, 21 station light rail line to Bethesda. As of a May 2026 project update, all rails were laid and opening was expected in late 2027. That will give Bowie commuters a one-seat rail ride from New Carrollton to College Park, Silver Spring and Bethesda without going through downtown.

What are the main roads out of Bowie?

Route 50 (the John Hanson Highway, also signed I-595 between the Beltway and Annapolis) runs along the city’s south side, west to DC and east to Annapolis and the Bay Bridge. Westbound mornings back up near the Beltway and New Carrollton. Eastbound summer Fridays back up with beach traffic.

MD 197 is Collington Road in its southern stretch and Laurel Bowie Road for most of its 14.64 miles. It runs from Route 301 through the Route 50 interchange, crosses MD 450, passes Bowie State and the MARC station, crosses the Baltimore Washington Parkway (MD 295), and ends at MD 198 near Laurel.

Route 301 (Crain Highway) runs north and south on the city’s east side past Prince George’s Stadium, crossing MD 214, MD 725 and MD 4 on its way toward Upper Marlboro and Waldorf.

MD 3 (Robert Crain Highway) picks up at the Route 50 and 301 interchange and runs 9.56 miles north through Crofton to I-97 and MD 32 near Millersville. It is the old alignment of Route 301 and it is chronically congested, so test it at rush hour before you commit.

MD 450 (Annapolis Road) runs through the Belair sections, and MD 564 runs through Old Town Bowie toward Lanham.

How do I get to Fort Meade, Joint Base Andrews and the Naval Academy?

Federal commuters also head west to NASA Goddard in Greenbelt and south to the Census Bureau in Suitland. Because Reagan National and Dulles mean crossing DC, many Bowie residents fly out of BWI by default.

Are there buses, park and rides or vanpools?

Yes, though they are a smaller share of trips. The City lists a park and ride lot on Northview Drive served by buses to New Carrollton, and Prince George’s County’s TheBus serves parts of Bowie. Private vanpools run from the Bowie and Crofton area into downtown DC; Commuter Connections helps match carpools.
