Townhome or Single-Family in Bowie? How to Compare the Real Monthly Cost
October 3, 2026Whether you are planning to age in place, moving with a parent, recovering from an injury or just tired of stairs, a bedroom and full bath on the main level can be the most important feature on your list. Bowie has more of these homes than people expect.
Home styles that often have main-level bedrooms
- Ramblers. One-level living by design. Many Bowie ramblers have a basement, so check where the laundry is.
- Levitt Cape Cods. Many Belair Capes have bedrooms and a full bath on the main floor with more bedrooms upstairs.
- Homes with additions. Some owners added a main-level primary suite or family room.
- Some newer homes. A few newer communities offer main-level primary suites.
What to check on a tour
- Entry. How many steps to the front door, and is there a level entry from a garage, side door or patio?
- Bathroom. Room to turn, a tub versus a walk-in shower, and space for grab bars.
- Doorways and halls. Wider is better for walkers and wheelchairs.
- Laundry. Main level or basement.
- Flooring. Fewer thresholds and less carpet make movement easier.
Help paying for changes
Some changes can be made after you buy. Our accessible homes guide covers modification options, including grants available to eligible veterans.
Let us do the filtering
Listing searches rarely filter for a main-level bedroom and full bath. Tell Bruno what you need and he will check every listing before it reaches you. Military buyers can also use the PCS Move Planner, which asks about main-level and accessibility needs up front.

Help paying for accessibility changes
If the house you love needs a ramp, a wider doorway or a walk-in shower, three programs can cut the cost. Check each one’s current status before you count on it.
- Prince George’s County Accessibility Features Tax Credit. A credit against the County part of your property tax bill for the lesser of 50% of eligible installation costs or $2,500, with any unused amount carried forward. It covers features like a no-step entrance or ramp, wider doorways, grab bars in reinforced walls, walk-in or roll-in showers, and lifts. The home has to be your owner-occupied principal residence, the work needs a permit from DPIE, and the application is due to the County Office of Finance by April 1 before the tax year you want the credit.
- Maryland Independent Living Tax Credit. A state income tax credit for up to 50% of qualifying accessibility renovation costs, capped at $5,000. DHCD says the program is closed now and reopens January 1, 2027. When it’s open, applications run from the first business day of January to June 1.
- Maryland Accessible Homes for Seniors. DHCD loans for accessibility work when someone in the home is 55 or older, with no payments until you sell, transfer or refinance, and grants up to $15,000 for lower-income households that don’t qualify for the loan. Income limits apply.
Selling a home with a main-level bedroom?
Say so in the first line of the listing and in the photos. Buyers filtering for one-level living often search for exactly that phrase, and a main-level bedroom with a full bath is worth calling out on its own.
