Bowie lifestyle: amenities

Bowie Neighborhoods Near Parks, Pools, Trails and Schools

Which Bowie neighborhoods sit next to Allen Pond, the swim clubs, the WB&A Trail and other amenities, with 2026 sales data and how to check school assignments yourself.

Bowie's best known amenity, Allen Pond Park, exists because farmer James Allen sold his land to Levitt and Sons in 1965 on the condition that it become a community park. Sixty years later, the City maintains 11 named parks, the WB&A Trail crosses the Patuxent into Anne Arundel County, and four member swim clubs plus a long list of HOA pools fill the summer calendar.

This page maps those amenities to the neighborhoods closest to them, with 2026 sales data where we have it, and shows you how to check school assignments yourself. It is about what is nearby, not who lives there.

Where are the pools?

The City of Bowie does not run a public pool. Summer swimming runs through four member clubs (Belair Bath and Tennis, Belair Swim and Racquet at 12728 Midwood Lane, Whitehall, and Pointer Ridge), HOA pools in communities such as Fairwood, Covington, Princeton Square and South Lake, and county facilities like Glenn Dale Splash Park and the indoor Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatics Center in Glenarden. Membership rules differ: HOA pools come with the deed, swim clubs with a separate application. Our Bowie pools page has the details.

Where are the trails?

The WB&A Trail follows the bed of the old Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis electric railway. Its Prince George's section, 5.6 miles from the Glenn Dale area into Bowie, opened in 2000, and since 2025 a 530 foot bridge over the Patuxent links it to Odenton for 12.7 continuous miles. The City counts more than 24 miles of hiking and biking trails overall, and newer communities such as South Lake and Melford build walking trails into the plan.

How do I check which schools serve a house?

Every public school assignment in Bowie, inside or outside city limits, comes from Prince George's County Public Schools. The City does not run schools. Listing descriptions and neighbors' memories are not reliable, because PGCPS has redrawn boundaries through its countywide boundary initiative.

  • Enter the exact street address in the PGCPS school boundary tool on pgcps.org, and save a dated screenshot.
  • For specialty programs (Talented and Gifted centers, Montessori, language immersion and others), check the PGCPS application calendar. Boundary seats are guaranteed; specialty seats are by application and lottery.
  • To compare schools, use the Maryland School Report Card at reportcard.msde.maryland.gov, which publishes each school's star rating, assessment results, attendance and other measures. Look at the specific school, not a district average.

Some schools sit right beside amenities. Northview Elementary is next to the City dog park on Northview Drive, Rockledge Elementary is across Laurel Bowie Road from the new ice arena site, and Bowie High School, 15200 Annapolis Road, hosts the Bowie Farmers Market on Sundays from May through October. Our Bowie schools guide explains boundaries, programs and report cards in detail.

City or county services?

Whitehall, the other Belair sections and South Lake are inside the City of Bowie, with City trash pickup, Bowie Police and City recreation pricing. Fairwood is unincorporated, with county services and no City tax. City facilities like the Ice Arena price by residency, so check the "Town" field on the SDAT record or read our city limits guide.
